Getting started with the trumpet

On the trumpet, the sound comes from your lips: the three valves give you the notes, your lips and your breath do the rest. That takes a little patience in the first weeks. tonestro listens to every note and shows you right away whether it was in tune and in time.

Play a little on most days and stop before your lips get tired. Short, regular sessions usually build your sound better than long ones.

Many adults come back to the trumpet after years in a school or community band. Choose the course that fits and go on from there.

Questions about learning trumpet

Can I learn trumpet as an adult?

Yes. Many adults start or come back to the trumpet. tonestro goes step by step and listens to every note you play.

Can I practice with a silent brass system?

No. tonestro needs the real sound of your trumpet. Silent brass systems, practice mutes with headphones and external microphones are not supported.

Is there a fingering chart?

Yes. The fingering chart for every note is built into the app.

Do I need to read music?

No. The courses teach you to read music while you play, and you can show note names while you learn.

How soon will I play my first trumpet song?

In your first 10 minutes. You play one or two notes along with a real song and a band: small at first, but real music. Full speed comes later, as your lips get stronger.

Which devices can I use?

Trumpet lessons run on iPhone and iPad (iOS 15 or newer) and on Android phones (Android 8 or newer, at least 4 GB of memory). tonestro needs an internet connection.

What does it cost?

You can try tonestro free for 7 days with the yearly plan. The app shows you the price before you buy. If you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, you won’t be charged. You can cancel in the app under Profile → Settings → Manage Subscription.
