At a glance
- Age
- Starting later is fine; lip muscles train at any age.
- Trumpet
- A Bb trumpet, the usual trumpet for beginners.
- Practice
- Around 15 to 20 minutes, nearly every day, with breaks.
- First song
- Ten minutes in: one or two notes along with a real song and a band.
Why adults learn the trumpet well
- You know the sound you want. A jazz solo, a hymn, the brass in your favorite song: that goal carries you through the first weeks.
- You practice smart. You understand why breaks, steady airflow and light mouthpiece pressure matter.
- Short sessions fit a busy life. On the trumpet, 15 focused minutes often do more than an hour of tired playing, and they fit before work or after dinner.
What you need to start
- A trumpet in Bb with its mouthpiece. If yours is in C, that works too.
- Valve oil. A few drops keep the valves running smoothly.
- An iPhone, iPad or Android phone with tonestro (iOS 15 or later; Android 8 or later with at least 4 GB of memory).
- A regular practice time. A trumpet is loud; pick a daily slot that suits your neighbors too.
How it starts
- Your first song
Your lips buzz in the mouthpiece and the first notes sound. Within ten minutes you join a real song on one or two of them, and a band plays with you.
- Five notes, a steady sound
A useful early goal is the five written notes C4, D4, E4, F4 and G4, and tonestro checks each for pitch and rhythm.
- Whole songs at full tempo
Each new note opens up more songs. Slow hard bars to 80% or 60% and raise the tempo once they feel comfortable and steady.
Your first trumpet songs
tonestro has 63 easy songs for trumpet in Bb. You probably know these:
- Ode to Joy
- Happy Birthday
- Bella Ciao
- Where Did You Sleep Last Night
- Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho
- Symphony No. 40
Tips for everyday practice
- Rest about as long as you play. After each phrase, give your lips a short break so your tone stays fresh.
- Keep it within reach. A trumpet on a stand usually gets played more often than one in its case.
- Stop on a good note. End the session while your sound is still clear.
Questions adults ask
Am I too old to learn the trumpet at 50 or 60?
No. Breath and lip strength build up at any age; start short and add time as your lips get stronger. More: Too old to learn an instrument?
Should I buy a Bb or a C trumpet?
Most beginners choose a Bb trumpet, the usual one in bands, jazz and beginner books. tonestro’s trumpet courses are written for the Bb trumpet too.
I played trumpet as a teenager. How fast will it come back?
Often faster than you expect: the fingerings usually return quickly, while your lips may need a few weeks of short sessions.
Can I start trumpet without reading music?
Yes. Trumpet music uses only the treble clef and one note at a time. Reading comes step by step while you play.
Can I learn trumpet without lessons?
