How long to learn guitar?

Roughly speaking, adults who play on most days strum simple songs with a few open chords within a few months and play barre chords and many songs after one to two years. Day one already brings your first song: within ten minutes, a band starts a real song and one or two of its notes are yours.

Your first two years on the guitar

  1. Day 1 Your first song

A band plays a real song, and one or two notes of it are yours. Holding the guitar and pressing strings still feel unfamiliar, which is exactly how day one should feel.

  2. Weeks 1 to 6 First chords, tougher fingertips

Single notes on the higher strings and two or three open chords start to sound clean. Tender fingertips are normal at first and usually settle within these weeks.

  3. Months 2 to 6 Songs with three or four chords

More of your chord changes land on the beat, simple strumming patterns with up-strokes join in, and easy songs come together at a relaxed tempo.

  4. Months 6 to 24 Barre chords and picking

The F chord and other barre chords start to ring, your picking patterns grow more varied, and many songs you love come within reach.

These ranges are general orientation for adults who play 15 to 30 minutes on most days, not tonestro data; everyone's pace is different.

What sets your pace

  • How often you play. Fingertips and chord shapes both grow from regular contact with the strings, so short sessions on most days pay off more than a long one on Sunday.
  • What you want to play. Simple strumming and simple picking patterns both fit your first months, while classical pieces played from notation ask for more reading from the start.
  • What you bring. If you play another instrument, rhythm and often reading come easier; the guitar's chord shapes are still new to your fretting hand.

How to progress faster

  • Time your chord changes. Count how many clean changes between two chords you manage in one minute, and note the number each week.
  • Slow songs down. Play a song in tonestro at 60 or 80 percent until the changes land on the beat.
  • One new chord at a time. Combine it with chords you already know before you learn the next one.
  • Keep a song list. Write down every song you can play from start to finish; the list grows faster than you think.

Questions about timing

How long does it take to learn basic guitar chords?

As a rough guide, open chords such as G, C and D feel secure after a few weeks; changing between them smoothly and in time usually takes a few months.

Can I learn guitar in a year?

Twelve months of regular practice often get adults to the point where they accompany songs with open chords and start on barre chords and more varied picking patterns. Playing freely takes longer, but you make music from day one.

How many minutes a day should I practice guitar?

Plan 15 to 30 minutes on most days. While your fingertips are still tender, split the time into two short sessions.

When can I play a whole song on guitar?

A simple song with two or three chords can come together at a slow tempo within your first weeks; at full tempo with clean changes, it often takes a few months. Why the changes take time: Is guitar hard to learn?
